The
current Michigan state flag is the third official Michigan
state flag and was adopted by Public Act 209 in 1911. The
first Michigan state flag displayed a portrait of Michigan's
first governor, Stevens T. Mason on one side of the Michigan
state flag, and the state
coat of arms on the other side of the Michigan state flag. In 1865, this Michigan state
flag was changed. Stevens T. Mason's portrait was removed and
the Michigan state flag displayed the Michigan coat of arms on
one side of the Michigan state flag, and the United States coat of arms on the other side
of the Michigan state flag,
perhaps in response to the end of the civil war. Today the
Michigan state flag displays only the Michigan coat of arms on
a field of blue.
The Bald Eagle on the
Michigan state flag represents the United States and the Elk
and Moose represent Michigan. Like many state flags, the
Michigan state flag is blue. And again like many others,
the Michigan state flag bears the state coat of arms. |
